The NoFollow Link Checker tool is a small utility that we use on a daily basis to help automate some
of the daily chores that we do to keep on top of how our web properties are doing.
What does it do?
The NoFollow Link Checker tool downloads the TSV file from Yahoo! SiteExplorer and follows each of the
links looking for a backlink to a given domain. During the course of its operation it gathers key information
about the backlink, Including anchor text, href and if it is a nofollow or a dofollow link.
What is nofollow?
nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct some search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target's ranking in the search engine's index. It is intended to reduce the effectiveness of certain types of search engine spam, thereby improving the quality of search engine results and preventing spamdexing from occurring.
Why is it important?
If you are building backlinks to a web property such as a blog or an ecommerce website it is important to
concentrate on getting high quality backlinks from authority websites. If the backlinks that your website
is acquiring have the nofollow attribute on them then they will only help your website in building traffic
and in branding your website but not with building PageRank. As of today the only way for a webmaster to know
if Google perceives your website as high quality is to see it's public PageRank via their free toolbar.
